Служебная собака, потерявшая лапу во время несения службы в Афганистане, получила высшую военную награду Великобритании для животных. Медалью Марии Дикин наградили 12-летнюю немецкую овчарку по кличке Лукка.
Церемония вручения почетной награды прошла в Веллингтонских казармах в центре Лондона, сообщает BBC. Медаль собаке вручил генеральный директор учредившей награду компании PDSA Ян Маклафлин. Он высоко оценил собачью “отвагу и верность военной службе”.
За шесть лет активной службы Лукка выполнила более 400 миссий в Ираке и Афганистане. В настоящее время боевая собака уже на пенсии. Лукка живет в Калифорнии со своим дрессировщиком – сержантом Крисом Уиллингемом. Немецкую овчарку специально возили в Лондон на церемонию награждения.
Лукка проходила обучение как поисковая собака в Корпусе морской пехоты США. Немецкую овчарку учили при помощи нюха находить боеприпасы и взрывчатые вещества. В 2012 году собака потеряла левую переднюю лапу во время поиска самодельных взрывных устройств. По данным морской пехоты США, Лукка спасла жизни тысячам солдат в союзных войсках.
Во время своего последнего дозора собака обнаружила самодельное взрывное устройство весом 13,6 килограмма. Когда Лукка искала вспомогательные взрывчатые вещества, бомба сработала. В результате немецкая овчарка получила ожоги груди и лишилась левой передней лапы. “Взрыв был мощным, и я опасался худшего исхода для Лукки”, – рассказал изданию дрессировщик собаки капрал Хуан Родригес.
Военный оставался рядом с Луккой на протяжении всей операции после полученной травмы и пока животное восстанавливалось. “Она столько раз спасла мою жизнь – я обязательно должен был оставаться рядом с ней, когда она нуждалась во мне”, – пояснил Родригес.
Высшая воинская награда для животных в Великобритании была учреждена в 1943 году по инициативе Марии Дикен, основательницы благотворительной организации помощи животным PDSA. Медаль сделана из бронзы, на ней изображен лавровый венок с надписями: “За мужество” и “Мы тоже служим”. За время существования медали ее вручили 67 животным: 31 собаке, 32 почтовым голубям, участвовавшим во Второй мировой войне, трем лошадям и одному коту.
