Отказ президента США Барака Обамы от строительства трубопровода Keystone XL вдохновил экологических активистов, которые готовятся к новым битвам, сообщает Time. Администрация объявила, что главное соображение, по которым решено отказаться от амбициозного проекта, это потенциальное влияние на глобальное потепление. Экологи, которые с самого начала выступали против транспортировки “грязной” нефти через территорию США, теперь надеются более эффективно добиваться запрета на освоение новых месторождений.
Keystone XL должен был соединить Канаду и побережье Мексиканского залива в американском штате Техас. Накануне, выступая перед журналистами в Белом доме, Обама заявил: “Я согласился с выводами госдепартамента о том, что этот проект не отвечает интересам национальной безопасности США”.
Администрация США сообщила о решении канадскому премьер-министру Джастину Трюдо, который выразил разочарование в связи с этим. По словам Обамы, одобрение этого проекта “подорвало бы лидирующую позицию США в защите окружающей среды”, передает ТАСС.
Госдепартамент проводил экологическую экспертизу проекта с 2008 года.
Многие экологические организации с самого начала высказывали серьезную обеспокоенность по поводу этого проекта, поскольку он предусматривает транспортировку через территорию США чрезвычайно грязного сырья, добываемого в нефтеносных песках канадской провинции Альберта. По их мнению, перекачивать большие объемы такой нефти через сельскохозяйственные угодья весьма рискованно.
Магистраль должна была позволить доставлять более 800 тысяч баррелей нефти в день на перерабатывающие предприятия в Техасе и Луизиане. Сторонники проекта утверждали, что он даст возможность Соединенным Штатам увеличить производство и экспорт нефтепродуктов, а кроме того, позволит создать новые рабочие места.
В феврале президент наложил вето на законопроект, принятый Конгрессом в поддержку строительства нефтепровода. “Мы не разрешим строить трубопровод, который принесет большие выгоды иностранному государству, если у нас не будет уверенности в том, что он не опасен для окружающей среды”, – подчеркнул тогда глава американской администрации.
